Word of the Day: Each day, the next word in the word of the day workbook will be written on the board. Students will write in the WOD journal (date, word, part of speech, definition, and sentence). Most students will work on a very creative sentence. Several students have a running theme to each WOD journal. Each of their entries are tied to a theme (lego block, Ed Jones Show!, Fishy Hamburgers, tornados!)
Daily Language Instruction (DLI): Each week we have a different element of conventions (grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling) to study during our Daily Language Instruction. New skills are introduced weekly and former skills are reviewed. Assessments are usually on Friday. After students have studied a lesson in DLI, they are expected to use the skill in their writing.
Word Teams: Every student is a member of a word team. They will all follow the following routine:
Day one: Introduced to the word pattern and spelling words with Ms. Bates
Day two - four: Work on the words through different activities. Students must assemble 40 points of activities.
Day five: Quiz with Ms. Moya on the carpet.
The word lists: Each week, a student has 25 words.
1-5: NO EXCUSE words. These are words that have been covered in previous years. They should be familiar and easy to the students.
6-10: Challenge words. These words are bonus. They are from our word of the day journal.
11-25: Word Team words. These are just right for the student. They should know a few but do need to study throughout the week the remaining words. These words are the level that your child tested into at the start of the year.
Earning 40 points: The first 10 points must be either writing complete sentences or the definition of each of the student's 25 words.
The remaining 30 points may be assembled from the any of the following combinations. 5 points: Stair step words b, be, bed Write all words in capitals, 3 times each. Write all words in cursive.
10 points: Write words in A-Z order and reverse A-Z order. Write each word in a sentence. Write the definition of each student. A quiz with a signature. (Students lose 5 points without a signature.)
15 points: A combination of a 5 and 10 point choice.
